MOBILE FOOD BANK!

A long-standing need of the rural hungry throughout our region has been for a quick, dependable food distribution system. In an effort to meet this need, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee established a "Mobile Food Bank" to deliver food to agencies in our rural areas.

Many of the rural agencies (food pantries and soup kitchens) do not have dependable transportation or the manpower necessary to supply their needs. Some of the more rural agencies have dropped out of our program in the past for these reasons. When we lose a viable agency everyone suffers, most of all the hungry children and families. Nutritional food, which would be available to them, waits in the warehouse while the hungry family waits at home. Helping agencies serve these hungry families is the focus of the Mobile Food Bank.

Through a grant from Con-Agra Foods Fund for Green County and Kraft Foods, Second Harvest was able to obtain funding for the Mobile Food Bank program. The program was launched in October, 2000 and is now making regular deliveries to agencies in the rural areas of Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson and Sullivan Counties.
